A group of people sitting at desks in a large, open office space with white walls and wooden floors, surrounded by rows of computer monitors and office equipment.

It was nice to have Charli interning in the office last week. We wish you well… xx

This is what she thought!

Behind the scenes of the Horton-Stephens office

Upon organising my work placement at Horton-Stephen’s photographers’ agency I was eager to dip my toes into the world of commercial photography, to see where I could belong in such an industry. After they accepted; it seemed like the perfect place to start.  I anticipated that the workplace would be surrounded by constant chaos and noise. However, once a part of the office, I was surprised to witness a much more relaxed and calm atmosphere than I first expected.

On the morning of Wednesday 13th of June I met the team of Horton-Stephens at Greys Advertising Agency, whereby I shadowed them in action as they pitched their photographers to potential clients. This was extremely interesting as I finally got a grasp of the extent to which this industry is people based and extremely communicative, whilst also understanding that each photographer is specifically talented at a particular photographic direction. For example, I strongly admired Johann Cohrs’s work of capturing motion and water, however on another level I was drawn in by Diana Miller’s food images.

I was then set to tapping my fingers to the world of Twitter, through the Horton-Stephens account, to promote, advertise, be engaging and educate potential clients (on up and coming events, competitions, quotes or just mindless fun). However, on a more serious level the energy put on twitter and other media outlets simply educated me to the need today to advertise and get photographers’ names out in the big wide world- Further illustrating the constant feisty competition between the thousands upon thousands of photographers around the world. In simple words: Photographers and their agents are very business savvy- But in a good way! Photography on the brain also makes you very hungry- I ventured out for a nice Jacket Potato at the Electric Elephant café a few roads down from the office (one of the nicest/cheapest jacket potatoes around).

As my own role goes, I have been closely checking features on the Horton-Stephens website. I’m aiming to identify any problems with the website and then report these back to the team to have them sorted out. As an observation, this further informed me that the need to have this efficient media outlet is vital in order to showcase the agency’s photographers across the globe.

Working with such a lovely team made the job even more enjoyable and I would like to thank you all for having me. This work placement has provided me with a basic understanding of commercial photography but also made me keen to find out more. I look forward to further opportunities with the company and with the rest of the world of photography!
